The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan is an epic tale (744 pages) of high fantasy and many magical systems. This is a hugely successful book published in 1990. I found it interesting and engaging, but I thought Jordan violated one of the tenants of storytelling in that the main character drives the story through the choices they make. The story is told through the eyes of Rand al’Thor, but Rand is swept along by the events and the decisions of other characters. Rand seems passive until the very end, except for a few glimpses of agency along the way. The end was unsatisfying with many questions unanswered. I guess that was on purpose because there are thirteen other books in The Wheel of Time series! What I did like was the wonderfully descriptive language Jordan used to describe characters, places, and events.
