Book Review: The Advocate

The Advocate by Randy Singer is a historical Christian fiction story based on the biblical figure Theophilus. In the Bible, Luke addresses his gospel and the book of Acts to Theophilus. The novel relates the life of Theophilus from the age of fourteen when he is attending a school of rhetoric taught by the famous teacher Seneca through his career as one of the Roman empire’s top advocates (legal advisor and defense attorney).

Singer does a great job of tying the story’s plot to biblical people and events from the trial of Jesus until the apostle Paul’s imprisonment in Rome. The tale has many twists and turns that kept me wondering what was going to happen next. Throughout the book there are many tense situations that kept me on the edge of my seat. I found it very interesting how Singer contrasted the pagan religious beliefs of the Romans with Christianity. The Advocate also depicts the brutal torture of Christian martyrs who refused to renounce their faith in Christ. I highly recommend this book. Check out the book on Amazon here.
