Lies can destroy a nation

Our president has lied continually about the results of the November 2020 election. Republican members of congress knew the president was lying to us, but most said nothing. On January 6, it became clear they knew the truth, because they had to either bow to the president or honor their oath of office. Thankfully, most honored their oath of office and chose to uphold the will of the majority of voters.

Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell rejected efforts to overturn the election results. On January 6, 2021 in a speech on the Senate floor McConnell said, “But my colleagues, nothing before us proves illegality anywhere near the massive scale, the massive scale that would have tipped the entire election. Nor can public doubt alone justify a radical break when the doubt itself was incited without any evidence. The Constitution gives us here in Congress a limited role. We cannot simply declare ourselves a National Board of Elections on steroids. The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken. They’ve all spoken. If we overrule them, it would damage our Republic forever.”

I am thankful Senator McConnell said what he said on January 6. I wish McConnell and other leaders had spoken up sooner and said there was no evidence of widespread election fraud. If the truth had prevailed sooner, maybe our U.S. Capitol would not have been attacked.

We, Christians, must be concerned about the sins of our nation and when our leaders place their personnel self-interest above the interests of our country. Consider these scriptures.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

1 Corinthians 13:6

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

The attempt to destroy our democratic institutions is a disgrace seen by nations around the world. We need to hold our leaders at every level accountable to tell us the truth. Conversely, we must not make our leaders afraid to tell us the truth. We have a responsibility to desire and seek the truth whether it is to our liking or not. If the love of Christ motivates us, we will pursue the truth and reject evil such as this misguided insurrection. Finally, let’s all remember to pray for our leaders.
